Version 2 of the NCDC AVHRR_OI is now complete
spacer

Version 2 of the NCDC AVHRR_OI is now complete. Version 1 has been removed from the FTP site. The time series has been extended to Sep 1981 in addition to other improvements.

More details can be found here: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/research/sst/papers/whats-new-v2.pdf

MODIS L2P files produced before 1 Jan 2009
have a error in the ‘time’ field
spacer
MODIS L2P files produced before 1 Jan 2009 have a error in the ‘time’ field.  This single integer value is supposed to represent the time in seconds since 1 Jan 1981 of the observation of the first pixel.  Instead this represents the time in seconds of the last pixel.  Subtract the the maximum value of the ‘dt_time’ array to arrive at the proper value for variable ‘time’.  Data since 1 Jan 2009 are OK.

PO.DAAC Alert: MODIS Data Outage
spacer

There will be a power outage at the NASA Goddard MODIS Facility from Wednesday, February 18, 5pm (EST) through Friday, February 20, 3pm (EST).  During this time there will be no MODIS level 0 data and hence no MODIS higher level products.

The affected data products will include all PODAAC Level 3 MODIS, all GHRSST L2P products and any other sea surface temperature product what relies on the MODIS data stream.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

International GHRSST Data Users Symposium registration
deadline is on 31 January 2009.
spacer

Jorge Vazquez (JPL) and Chelle Gentemann (RSS) would like to invite you to participate in the International GHRSST Users Symposium to be held 28-29 May 2009 in Santa Rosa, CA.

Please forward, or redistribute as you please, to your center, school faculty, colleagues, or student email lists. Grants are available for students!

International GHRSST Data Users Symposium
28-29 May 2009, Santa Rosa, CA

The Group for High-Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) project provides a new generation of uniformly processed satellite SST data and global high-resolution (<10km) SST products to the operational oceanographic, meteorological, climate and general scientific community. More information on the project is at
http://www.ghrsst-pp.org/. The symposium will update SST data users on satellite data sets and the current status of blended products. We are requesting presentations on the latest research and/or applications using GHRSST data. Topics may include, but are not limited to: oceanographic research, air-sea interactions, coral reefs, ocean modeling and forecasting, maritime pollution monitoring, coastal environmental protecting and management, fisheries, marine park management, sea ice, ocean circulation, and data assimilation systems. The two day symposium aims to assemble a diverse group of scientists to discuss recent advances in the knowledge of processes related to sea surface temperature and foster enhanced collaboration between GHRSST data users and research groups.

The GHRSST Data Users Symposium will be held at the Vineyard Creek Hyatt in Santa Rosa, CA, USA, from 28 to 29 May 2009, at the invitation of Remote Sensing Systems and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC). A detailed agenda will be established and circulated later, however we suggest that an early reservation is made for hotels, as Santa Rosa is a popular travel destination. Deadline for registration is 31 January 2009. More

MODIS L2P Aqua and Terra data files
spacer
"The MODIS L2P Aqua and Terra data files identified with an anomaly for the period of 28 March - 15 April 2008 are being reprocessed. These reprocessed data have a slightly different filename: in the free form part of the L2P filename a "GHRSST_N" or "GHRSST_D" is added to more closely reflect the original name of the HDF Level 2 MODIS file from the NASA Ocean Biology Processing Group.

These reprocessed files and forward stream files that have these new filenames also have adjusted L2P "proximity_confidence" flags to more closely aligned with other GHRSST L2P products. The sole adjustment was to change the flag 2 to become a 1. Flags 5,4, and 3 still represent the best quality. These changes were made in collaboration with the GHRSST Science Team following discussions at the AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting in Orlando, Florida in early March 2008. "

GHRSST Announcement
spacer

The Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) would like to announce several new sea surface temperature products available through the Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC) of the GHRSST-PP (Global Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Pilot Project). New products available in the GHRSST-PP L2P/L4 format include:

1) Regional 6 km Level 2P from the NOAA GOES 11 and 12 geostationary platforms at 1/2 hourly intervals

2) Global daily 1 km L2P from the NASA Aqua and Terra MODIS sensors. These SST products include commensurate chlorophyll and K490 observations.

3) A Level 4 global daily 5 km optimally interpolated Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA) from the UK Met Office.

The Medspiration European RDAC will no longer provide L2P data from AMSR-E, TMI, or AVHRR. These data sets will continue to be provided by Remote Sensing Systems (REMSS) and the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO).

All products are available through ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/GHRSST. Historical data that are 30 days or older can be found at the GHRSST Longterm Stewardship and Reanalysis Center (LTSRF; http://ghrsst.nodc.noaa.gov)

GHRSST Near Real-Time SST DataNow Available
spacer

The Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center would like to announce the availability of near real-time SST data from the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP). Data are
available in netCDF format in near real-time from 6 different sensors: AMSR-E, TMI, AVHRR-16, AVHRR-17, the European AATSR and the European SEVIRI instrument. Coverage currently includes the Atlantic, along with the Southeast Pacific Ocean. Additional regions and sensors will be added as the data is made available to us. Our goal is global coverage.

Data are available through the ftp site:
ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/pub/GHRSST/,

with documentation and information accessible through
http://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.gov
